last glance

I have quite a few pictures of this unicorn in my gallery already, but I was going though my pictures, and this one caught my attention. The look in her eye reminded me of unicorn folklore.

The way that the unicorn must have known that it had been betrayed, as if it was a last look into the maiden's eyes after hearing the hunter and his dogs approaching from behind. The maiden knowingly played a part in the hunt, luring the unicorn out of the forest. Yet knowing of the conspiracy, the unicorn closed its eyes as it willingly laid its head in her lap. The sounds of the hounds and hunter grew closer, and so, too, with them, came death.

This was my first unicorn sculpture. She is completely hand sculpted and painted by me. She is made out of Super Sculpey polymer clay and magic-sculpt epoxy over a wire and foil armature. Her horn and tail are made out of Super Elasticlay a type of polymer clay that remains flexible after baking to prevent sculpture breakage. Painted with acrylics and has 18kt gold leaf on her horn. She is 5 1/4 in tall at the tip of the horn.
Since this was an earlier piece, a lot of my preferred materials and sculpting techniques have changed since creating this sculpture.
